Compared with 2006 more people are suffering from high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. In 8 out of the 11 countries the incidence of diabetes has increased.

The most frequently occurring illnesses in families across the 11 countries are high blood pressure, sight problems, obesity and stress – in every case there are significant variations by country. The Russians appear to suffer most from high blood pressure and high cholesterol (65% and 62% respectively) rather more than the all country averages. For minor everyday ailments like headache, cough, cold and indigestion people are most likely to have purchased over the counter (OTC) treatments whereas prescription drugs are common for backache, muscle pain and arthritis. See table

Their treatments

Although backache and/or muscle pain are common across all countries (average 61%) the treatments vary by country. In Belgium, France and Portugal those who suffered are most likely to have visited the doctor for a prescription drug, whereas in the UK they’re more likely to have used an OTC remedy. 16% of those with backache or muscle pain visited an alternative health practitioner. Herbal and homeopathic remedies are most likely to be used for allergies, arthritis and respiratory problems.

Conclusions for Marketers:

Whilst ailments such as backache, muscle pain and head colds are suffered universally, the treatments vary by country. Other illnesses and ailments (such as allergies and respiratory problems) are more common in some countries.
